Darinka Piqani is one of the researchers in the interdisciplinary research project 'The Challenge of Enforcing Rule of Law in International Organizations: Winning the Public and Resisting Populist Attacks'
Darinka Piqani, member of the Europa Institute, together with Honorata Mazepus and Dimiter Toshkov (both from the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs) and Nikoleta Yordanova (Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences), conduct research in the context of the Global Transformations and Governance Challenges (GTGC) Initiative of Leiden University. Their project entitled 'The Challenge of Enforcing Rule of Law in International Organizations: Winning the Public and Resisting Populist Attacks' explores in what ways international organizations can successfully enforce compliance with the rule of law without losing citizens’ trust and support. The project takes an interdisciplinary approach and aims at serving as the basis for further research into global actors beyond the EU or the Council of Europe, such as the ICC, IMF, the African Union, Mercorsur etc.
A preliminary design of the experimental survey that will be conducted in Poland on the enforcement of rule of law by the European Commission and the Court of Justice, was presented during the first GTGC international conference held on 8-10 June 2022 in the Hague. The project will be further presented at the ECPR General Conference that will take place in Innsbruck (Austria) on 22-26 August 2022.
