eLaw presented the Horizon Europe BIAS project during the 'Algorithms for Her?' conference
Carlotta Rigotti and Dr Eduard Fosch-Villaronga from Leiden University presented the Horizon Europe BIAS project and its preliminary findings on fairness and diversity biases of AI applications in the labour market during the 'Algorithms for Her?' conference.
On 23 March 2023, Carlotta Rigotti and Dr Eduard Fosch-Villaronga presented the BIAS project during the 'Algorithms for Her?' conference, organised by Sheffield University.
In their presentation, Carlotta and Eduard briefly explained the BIAS project, which aims to identify and mitigate diversity biases of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the labour market, especially in human resources (HR) management. For this purpose, Leiden University and the rest of the BIAS Consortium is engaging in extensive consultation and co-creation with a diverse pool of stakeholders, to then develop a trustworthy, novel technology for bias identification and mitigation in AI applications.
The presentation then focused on the preliminary findings of the said consultation and co-creation process, while emphasising the divergent definitions, professional experiences, and personal attitudes towards 'fairness' and 'diversity bias'. More precisely, Carlotta and Eduard covered the research outputs arising from the literature review, the mapping exercise of existing AI applications, semi-structured interviews of HR executives and AI developers, and the survey of workers' experiences.
The presentation finished with a Q&A session, where participants were asked about their own formulation of fairness and diversity biases.
This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe programme under the open call HORIZON-CL4-2021-HUMAN-01-24 - Tackling gender, race and other biases in AI (RIA) (grant agreement No. 101070468).
