Programme

When deciding what to study you undoubtedly read a lot of information about your study programme. Leiden University employs various systems to provide information about programmes and courses and to facilitate communication between lecturers and students.

The Prospectus contains information about all the courses within your study programme. Here you can find all you need to know about your programme. Via the online learning environment Brightspace you can communicate with your lecturers and submit assignments.

The Course and Examination Regulations (OER in Dutch) and the Rules and Regulations set by the Boards of Examiners (R&R) can be found on the page Faculty and study programme regulations.

The programme is 120 EC in extent and consists of several course-work modules for a total of 82 EC, and a master’s thesis research project of 38 EC. The course-work modules cover methodological issues, foundational and advanced business related topics, and foundational and advanced ICT related topics. Elective courses on ICT, business and governmental topics allow students to individualise their programme and accommodate their specific interests. In addition, there are possibilities to customise the programme through international exchange programmes.

The curriculum depends on the student’s background. Students with a business background follow the foundation courses on ICT (15 ECTS total). Students with an ICT background follow the foundation courses on Business (15 ECTS total). Students with a Bachelor degree ‘Informatica & Economie’ from Leiden University are exempted from the courses in the foundation modules. These students follow additional electives instead for 15 ECTS. Students who choose for the specialisation ICT in Business need to take all courses from the Module specialisation ICT in Business (24 ECTS in total), whereas students who choose for the specialisation ICT in the Public Sector take all courses from the Module specialisation ICT in the Public Sector (24 ECTS in total). Students who choose both specialisations have to take all specialisation courses from both specialisations resulting in a total of 144ECTS.

There are two specialisations:

  • ICT in Business
  • ICT in the Public Sector

Courses are given in Leiden and The Hague. We advise students to find housing in Leiden. The courses are normally offered in a combination of (guest)lectures, company visits, case work, lab work, and student presentations. Many activities are based on team work. The 120 ECTS  programme structure is as follows:
