Invitation CERTAINTY

The Media Technology MSc programme proudly invites you to this year’s Statement to Experience project exhibition with the title CERTAINTY. Media Technology students are encouraged to develop a playful and creative approach towards science. Students are educated to translate personal interests and inspiration into research projects. Our programme is open to unusual questions, unconventional research methods and alternative forms of scientific output besides written articles. This includes installations, games and books as a possible result from academic research. The Statement to Experience project is a good example of this approach: students are challenged to translate their own science-inspired statements into works that communicate these statements as experiences within the exhibition.

Statement to Experience

Do you know your brain is similar to a JPEG?
Is our feeling of knowing 'knowledge' itself?
What if society works exactly how you would want it to?

The overall theme for this year’s exhibition project is CERTAINTY . The students work in groups, each with their own process. The exhibition project has three phases. First, students are asked to search for scientific insights that relate to the theme certainty. After sufficient exploration they are asked to formulate compelling statements related to their findings. Once this stage is completed they translate their statements into works that convey their statements as experiences.

Exhibition host: V2_

The host for this year’s exhibition is V2_, Lab for the Unstable Media in Rotterdam. V2_ is an interdisciplinary center for art and media technology that produces, archives and publishes research at the interface of art, technology and society.

Exhibition Dates

Free admission. The final works are exhibited on December 13th, 12:00-21:00 and on December 14th & 15th, 12:00-18:00.

Exhibition Opening

The official opening of the Statement to Experience project exhibition takes place on Thursday December 12th, 17:00 - 19:00, with a ceremonial event at 17:30.

Events Parallel to the Exhibition

  • On Saturday December 14th at 15:00 we welcome Aleksander Väljamäe, Associate Professor in physiological computing, part of the Human Computer Interaction group of Tallinn University, Estonia. His lecture Neurodramaturgy of Physiology-based Interaction in Neurotheatre and Neurocinema focuses on neurocinema, neurotheatre and interactive installations that use human physiological data. It includes Väljamäe's work on the neurotheatre performance Demultiplexia, and reflects upon the neurocinematic performance DataWe developed for Resonances III Festival 2019 at the Joint Research Center, European Commission. Demultiplexia premiered at Bozar Electronic Arts Festival in Brussels, BEAF 2017. The performance invited spectators to participate in a unique experience of non-verbal communication led by future cyber-enhanced humans. This neurotheatre performance embraced a number of emerging research topics such as neurocinematics, neurochoreography and collective Brain-Computer Interfaces. The recent work DataWe addresses the topics of visual violence, disinformation, neurosecurity and behavioral policy in an interactive narrative that involves the audience into media manipulation.

  • On Sunday December 15th at 15:00 we organise What’s Next? - On Being a Media Artist with Thijs Eerens and Marion Tränkle, both Media Technology MSc alumni. They will speak about their work as artists and talk about how they came to do what they do now.
