Tuesday Talks: Science Insights is de maandelijkse dosis onderzoeksinspiratie van Leiden Science, van onze medewerkers, voor onze medewerkers en alle andere nieuwsgierigen.

De voertaal voor deze lezingenserie is Engels.

This edition will take place during the Faculty of Science's Opening of the Academic Year.

Imagine being able to see inside objects, living tissues, or even centuries-old paintings—instantly, in high resolution, and without cutting them open. This is the promise of next-generation 3D interior imaging.

Today, such scans require large, static, and power-hungry machines, and results often arrive only after expert analysis. But what if this process could be made as fast, flexible, and smart as the camera in your smartphone?

Join us for this Tuesday Talk, where Professor of imaging and visualisation Joost Batenburg will explore the quest to make 3D interior imaging as fast, flexible, and intelligent as modern vision technology.

Three Key Challenges

At the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), Batenburg leads research to revolutionise interior imaging. His work focuses on three main challenges: improving acquisition speed, increasing flexibility in scanning setups, and embedding intelligence into the imaging process. By tackling these challenges, his team aims to bring real-time, high-quality 3D interior vision closer to reality.
In this talk, he will share progress on these fronts and explain how these innovations could transform fields from medicine and life sciences to materials research and art conservation.

About the speaker

Joost Batenburg is Professor of Imaging and Visualization at LIACS, Leiden University, and programme director of the interdisciplinary research programme Society, Artificial Intelligence and Life Sciences (SAILS). He is also affiliated with the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI). His research focuses on tomographic imaging and reconstruction, including the development of real-time 3D imaging methods. He leads the FleX-Ray lab, where a custom-designed CT system is connected to advanced data processing and AI algorithms.

About Tuesday Talks: Science Insights

Tuesday Talks: Science Insights is Leiden Science’s monthly dose of research inspiration from our staff, for our staff and all others curious minds. Every second Tuesday of the month from 16:00 hrs till 17:00 hrs, drinks and meet up afterwards till 18.00 hrs.

In September the Tuesday Talk will take place on the first Tuesday of September during the Faculty Opening of the Academic Year.
