Introducing ONEM: the best of optical and electron microscopy combined
Sense Jan van der Molen and his team have developed a new imaging technique that merges the strengths of optical and electron microscopy—combining non-destructive, in-solution imaging with high spatial resolution. This method, called optical near-field electron microscopy (ONEM), enables observation of biological and chemical processes in liquid without causing damage. Making it interesting for dynamical ánd living processes.
Join us for this Tuesday Talk, where Sense Jan van der Molen will explain how this unique microscope works and will present initial results. He will showcase an E. Coli bacterium swimming around to find its food, as well as an electrodeposition experiment that is imaged live.
About the speaker
Sense Jan van der Molen is a Professor of Condensed Matter Physics and scientific director of the Leiden Institute of Physics. His research focuses on the electronic properties of low-dimensional quantum materials, such as van der Waals materials and molecular layers. His lab uses methods based on low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM). Novel instrumentation concepts in his group are developed together with the fine mechanical and electronics departments.
