Maarten Mous, Lexicale magneten (of “crazy rules”) in een Bantoe naamwoordklassensysteem
Enger (2009) bespreekt “crazy rules” in gendertoekenning in Germaanse talen zoals “alcoholische dranken zijn manlijk” in het Duits. Mreta et al (1997) noemen iets vergelijksbaars voor het Swahili. Een Bantoe naamwoordklassesysteem is een overt grammaticaal gendersysteem met morfologische, automatische agreement als basis. Ik bespreek hoe bepaalde woorden in een Bantoe naamwoordklasse als een magneet kunnen werken en semantisch zeer vergelijkbare woorden naar die klasse kunnen trekken. Een woord voor kalebas trekt allerlei woorden voor specifieke kalebassen naar de klasse van de overkoepelende term. Een gevolg hiervan is dat een naamwoordklasse verschillende conglomeraties krijgt van woorden die dicht bij elkaar zijn in betekenis.

Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade, Iconic “Fowler”: 100 years of the Dictionary of Modern English
The year 2026 is a “Fowler year”: it is exactly a hundred years ago that Fowler’s Modern English Usage (MEU) was published. Immediately popular at the time (McMorris 2001), the work saw its fourth edition in 2015, but his name only recently made it into the Oxford English Dictionary as a proper noun (n2) (following other iconic names like Webster n2 or Wedgwood n). This talk will go into questions like who Fowler was, what made him embark on the project that he started with his brother Frank and which led to The King’s English (1906) and eventually to his famous Dictionary of Modern English Usage, and it will show that MEU is more than just a stuffy work of reference. Finally, I will concede that depicting Fowler in his swimsuit as David Crystal does in his Encyclopedia of the English Language rather than in formal academic attire like other academic linguists was meant as a kind of tribute to this unusual writer on language.
