Content
Chinese painting is one of the four fundamentals of Chinese arts (琴棋书画) together with Guqin - playing a traditional seven string instrument, Go - playing Chinese chess with black and white stones and Calligraphy with ink and brush. All going back over 2000 years in time. Chinese painting needs focus, concentration and regular breathing. It has a calming effect on the body and mind. In these classes you will learn Xieyi-style and Mogu-style painting.
Xie means 'to write' and Yi ‘meaning' (写意). Xieyi is about painting the spirit of the beings. It’s a direct impressionistic way of painting. You will learn how to use the brush and how to mix different layers of colours in one brush stroke. The works are all on raw Xuan-paper (生宣纸), made of tree skin or bamboo.
Mogu-style (沒骨) is a Chinese painting style that literally means ‘boneless’. The essence of Mogu is a layer over layer build up of colours without the use of outlines in ink. The bones. These works are made on (pimade) Xuan-paper (熟宣纸) with a smooth top layer of alum to slow down the pigments from drying. The paper is also made of tree skin or bamboo. After every class you have a self made artwork to take home.
Materials are present during the lessons. For at home you have to buy materials yourself. You can ask your teacher for advice.

'I visited painting and calligraphy Masters at my father's hand at a young age and still memorise their passion for the art of writing with the Chinese brush. I was taught to write all five main Chinese calligraphy styles and have been studying the classic paintings of the Gongbi style from the Song Dynasty and Master Yu Feian's. And I spent years learning the Mogu painting style of Yun Shouping and Jiang Tingxi and I learned Xieyi-style from my father. After studying interior design I continued with art and design at Shanghai University, College of Fine Arts and have been working as a designer and artist since 1999. In 2019 I moved to Holland and founded Poetic Ink, a community of passionate Chinese culture lovers.'
