Diaspora drumming: theory and practice | English spoken

Saturday 5 November from 15:00-17:30 h

Arno Willekes

(Here a summary of some of the 'traditional' drumming that actually travels 'back to Africa'. Diaspora cultures are never one way journeys!)

For whom
For everyone who's interested in the historical and anthropological background of percussive music with an African origin, and also want to practice these rhytms in a group.

In this lecture and workshop we will look at the many forms of percussive music with an African origin, spread out all over the world but mainly concentrated in the Americas and Caribbean.
Specific examples are the many Cuban 'Afro' drums and rhythms which are of Nigerian origin, such as parts of the rumba and bata repertoires.
Another direct link are the many hybrid types of percussive music found in the French Antilles and named gwoka or ka.

After the lecture in which the historical and anthropological backgrounds are discussed, we will take one of the pieces of gwoka music and practice these rhythms in a group.

Drums are present in class. After the workshop there is a possibility to have a drink and a chat with teacher Arno Willekes.

Arno Willekes studied Cultural Anthropology at Leiden University and graduated with a thesis on the socio-cultural context of djembe players and their music in Tambacounda, East-Senegal. Since then he has studied extensively the music of all the styles of djembe and doundoun music with varying teachers and in varying musical setups. He also studied the sabar percussionmusic of Senegal during this time. Since 2000 Arno teaches to young and old, at schools, institutions and companies and he this with a noticeable entousiasm and a love for musical teamwork and performing.
