Making payment

There are several ways of paying your tuition fee. The methods available to you are determined by your situation and your study programme.

When (re)registering as a student of Leiden University you can pay your tuition fee by way of digital direct debit under certain conditions. These are that you are a national of a country in the European Economic Area (EEA), Suriname or Switzerland, or are classed as having the equivalent of Dutch citizenship; and that your bank account is in a SEPA country.

The EEA consists of: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom

Payment details in Studielink

To pay by way of digital direct debit, you must first enter your payment details into Studielink. The university will then determine the amount of tuition fee you are required to pay and you will be asked to authorise your direct debit via Studielink. Terms and conditions can be found on the authorisation page.

Instalments or one lump sum

You can choose to have your tuition fee deducted from your bank account in one lump sum or in five instalments. For payment in instalments a one-off administrative fee of 24 euro will be charged.

Payment dates

Your tuition fee payments will be deducted from your account on the instalment dates stated below. If you choose to pay in one lump sum, the fee will be deducted on the first instalment date.

Changing bank account number

If you have already set up a direct debit, but decide you want to pay from a different bank account, you can change your bank account details via Studielink. If you have difficulties doing so, instead submit a signed change of bank account form to Leiden University financial department by email.

Payment by third parties

If someone else will pay your tuition fee by way of digital direct debit they must have a bank account in a SEPA country
If you have indicated in Studielink that a third party will pay your tuition fee, the university will first determine the amount of tuition fee due, then send you an activation code by email. You must forward this email to the person paying your tuition fee so they can log into Studielink. Your payment details can then be updated and your payment authorised.

Questions about digital direct debits?

Are you a non-EEA national? If so, payment by way of digital direct debit is not possible. Instead you will receive an invoice stating the amount of tuition fee due and the methods of payment available.

If your employer is paying your tuition fee you can request an invoice from the university financial department which you can forward to your employer. As you are ultimately responsible  for payment of your tuition fee we always send invoices to the correspondence address you provided in Studielink. If Studielink registration  is not required for your programme we will send the invoice to the address you provided in your application.

Once you have sent the invoice to your employer he/she must pay the whole amount in one lump sum, making sure to mention your student number in the transaction. Payment in instalments is not permitted if your employer is paying your tuition fee.

If you cannot pay your tuition fee by digital direct debit, or you do not wish to, you can instead pay by bank transfer or debit card. A third party can also do so on your behalf. Payment can only be made in one lump sum when paying  by bank transfer of debit card. Instalments are not permitted.

If you are registered in Studielink you must still make sure to enter your payment details. Only after doing this will you see the amount you are required to pay.

If a third party is paying your tuition fee you must also complete a power of attorney for tuition fee payment and return this as signed attachment to the university financial department.

2316 XB  Leiden Be aware that your bank may charge a fee for bank transfers. You are responsible for payment of any bank fees incurred. 

Debit card

Payment can only be made using Maestro debit cards or cards with the V PAY logo. Be aware that maximum debit card limits vary from bank to bank. If the amount of tuition fee due exceeds your daily limit you are permitted to pay in more than one transaction. 

When paying by credit card please be aware that additional charges apply.

Are you studying at more than one Dutch educational institution? If so you will generally only have to pay tuition fee to one institution. At the other institution you can instead submit a formal proof of tuition fee payment (Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld or BBC in Dutch).

You pay tuition fees to another institution and will also study in Leiden

If you will follow a study programme at Leiden University for which you must pay statutory tuition fee you can instead hand in a BBC. You can request a BBC from the institution where you are paying tuition fees. For more information about submitting a BBC please contact the Student Affairs Front Office.

You pay tuition fees to Leiden University and will also study at another Dutch institution

Only if you are following a study programme at Leiden University for which you are paying statutory tuition fee (or an amount equal to it) can you request a BBC from the Student Affairs Front Office at Plexus student centre. You can then submit the BBC at your other institution. 

If you would like to make any changes to your method of payment during the academic year, please submit a change of payment method form to Leiden University financial department by email.
