Safe use of IT

  • Make sure that your home computer, mobile phone and tablet are updated and have good security software. You can download free anti-virus software, for example MS Security Essentials and Avira Anti Virus, or purchase affordable anti-virus software via SURFspot.
  • Use a trusted and secure (wifi) network. If you are on a public wifi networ, you can protect yourself by using eduVPN.
  • Be alert for phishing and fake emails. If you receive an unexpected email or an email from an unfamiliar sender, do not click on any links, open any attachments or enter any details. The university will never ask you for your passwords by email. If you think you have received a phishing email, report it in the helpdesk portal.
  • Use OneDrive to save and share files safely.
  • Close the browser completely after having been logged in. Do not save your passwords in your browser.

GenAI use in education

This page provides general information and guidelines about GenAI and its responsible use by students of FGGA.

What is GenAI?

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is a form of machine learning. It is the collective term for algorithms capable of creating new content. This content can take different forms: text or code, as well as images, videos and audio, or a combination of all of these.

GenAI generates output in response to a query/prompt using generative models such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and relies on large data sets to do so. Some well-known examples are text generators such as ChatGPT, the integration of ChatGPT into Microsoft Bing, Google Gemini, and image generators such as DALL-E and Midjourney. FGGA also provides its students and staff with their own GenAI environment, called LUChat.

How can I use GenAI in my studies?

Information about what use of GenAI is and is not permitted, and guidelines for responsible use, can be found in the FGGA GenAI student guidelines. In principle, your course instructor is always the one who decides whether GenAI may be used and under what conditions, on a subject-by-subject, assignment-by-assignment or activity by-activity basis. Please note: your programme may have additional rules.

To learn more about GenAI in the academic context, we recommend the following e-module: GenAI and LLMs in the academic community.

LUChat

As a student of FGGA, you have access to LUChat, the GenAI environment of Leiden University. LUChat is designed to provide a highly secure and completely private environment in which you can interact with multiple, industry-standard LLM tools. You can think of it as a safe, secure, European-hosted, GDPR-compliant version of ChatGPT. However, this does not mean that its use for your studies is automatically permitted. As outlined in the regulations above, the teacher always decides, on a subject-by-subject, assignment-by-assignment or activity by-activity basis, whether AI is permitted and what conditions apply. You should therefore always follow the instructions and guidelines that apply to your course.
