Buddies wanted for new students quarantining at home

31 July 2020

Helping a student who’s new to the university? Is that something for you? Leiden University is doing all it can to give new students a warm welcome, which is more of a challenge this year because of the corona measures. We’re looking for current students who would like to help students, including international students, in self-quarantine.

Who are we looking for?

Current students who have a few hours a week (max. 3 hours) to give a helping hand to students, including international students, having to self-quarantine at home.

Why?

Some new students will be in self-quarantine once they arrive, if they’ve come from a country or region coded orange or red. The government’s firm advice for anyone coming – or returning – from these countries is to self-quarantine for 14 days when they arrive in the Netherlands. FAQ for students coming from a region with an orange or red travel advice.

What kind of help are we talking about?

The idea is for you to contact the student by phone or online so that they have some social contact in the initial period of their study time. As students in self-quarantine can’t leave the house, you’ll also do some grocery shopping for them a maximum of twice a week.

When would you be needed and for how long?

The buddy service runs from 27 July to the end of September. Quarantine at home lasts for 14 days, and during this period you’ll support the student by staying in touch and possibly doing some grocery shopping for them.

What’s in it for you?

First of all, a lot of gratitude from students who can’t go out of the house! There’s also a small volunteer allowance (10 euros/hour, up to a maximum of three hours a week).

Interested?

Fill in the registration form and the coordinator of the buddy group will get in touch with more details of the buddy service.
