Are you almost finished with your master's? Then you may apply for an NWO PhD grant
Are you an MA student, graduating this academic year 2020-2021 before September 1, 2021, and do you aim to continue your studies with a PhD research at the Faculty of Archaeology? There is a possibility, offered by NWO (Dutch Science Foundation), to obtain a PhD grant through the PhD in the Humanities grant.
The Faculty of Archaeology will participate in the PhD in the Humanities grant program 2021 and is able to match one (1) PhD position. The official call will be published by NWO in December.
The 2020 procedures are informative - procedures will most probably not be altered. However, make sure to check the guidelines as soon as the call 2021 is online.
Procedure and deadlines
Only proposals that are selected by the Faculty Boards of the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Archaeology are allowed to submit at NWO. At the Faculty of Archaeology the Faculty Research Committee assesses the proposals on behalf of the Faculty Board.
There are two selection rounds:
- (Round 1) Internal selection December 2020 at the Faculty of Archaeology. Max. 1 proposal per 'daily supervisor' (i.e. not per promotor) can be submitted to the Research Committee: a promotor who is involved in two proposals and co-operating with two different 'daily supervisors' is allowed to send in both proposals.
The Research Committee will determine the ‘top three’. Archaeology is allowed to submit a maximum of three proposals to the next selection round by the Science Committee Humanities/Archaeology.
- (Round 2) January / February 2021: The Science Committee consisting of Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Archaeology staff will select the ‘top five’ from the pre-selected Archaeology and Humanities proposals (January 2018).
Only the five proposals selected in this 2nd round can be submitted to NWO.
Applications should consist of:
- a full proposal in NWO-format and CV in English (filling in the budget, is not yet needed). Note that there is a NWO-format for the CV as well.
- email (Dutch or English) of supervisor (‘promotor’) declaring willingness as supervisor for candidate & project.
