LUC The Hague: A Message from the Dean

28 October 2020

Time flies! Block 2 has started and Halloween is almost upon us. No trick or treating this year, but I am sure we can leave out the trick and just treat ourselves. To a scary movie, to pumpkin pie, or to roasted marshmallows. While studying of course…

We also start the block with a fully staffed and ‘studented’ College Council (CC) and Program Council (PC). Both Councils provide advice to the decision-making bodies of LUC, and aim to represent the interests of staff and student members of the College. The CC advises the College Board on non-academic issues at LUC, and the PC advises the Program Board on everything to do with the academic program.  The student representatives of the CC and PC are open to suggestions from the student community for issues to raise in these councils. So do use the opportunity to put things that are important to you on their agendas by sending them a message: cc@luc.leidenuniv.nl and programmecouncil@luc.leidenuniv.nl.

For me Block 2 also comes with a new challenge: teaching a course online! I know our indefatigable LUC staff is way ahead of me on this one, but I am now about to find out what it’s like. Unfortunately I am not teaching the course at LUC, but at Child and Education Studies. For close to 300 students instead of 20… The course is on Intercultural Pedagogics, and I am busy making lecture videos and podcast interviews with youth professionals with roots in the Global South. The course will be critical of current practices in education and youth care in the Netherlands where cultural normativity and a narrow view on what constitutes effectiveness are rife. Am looking forward to having these discussions with the students!

In the meantime, do enjoy and make the most out of your courses at LUC this block. Online or hybrid, synchronous or asynchronous, give yourself the present of truly engaging with the professor, the materials, and your fellow students. Time will again fly, and so will your mind and spirits.
