BSA norm lowered to 40 study credits this year
Due to the coronavirus situation, Leiden University's Executive Board has lowered the BSA norm this year from 45 to 40 study credits + any additional requirements in so far as these apply. The Executive Board made the decision after consultation with the vice-deans and co-participation bodies.
In addition, study programmes are entitled to further adjust their BSA rules if they feel this is necessary. As always, exceptions can also be made for individual students who run into difficulties as a result of personal circumstances or cases of 'extreme unfairness' - this at the discretion of the board of examiners (articles 3.1.3 and 3.5 of the BSA regulations).
The BSA has only been lowered for first-year students (who began their studies in September 2020). The BSA had already been postponed for students who started in 2019, but for them the norm remains 45 study credits.
The norm has also been lowered for part-time students, from 30 to 25 study credits (+ any additional requirements in so far as these apply).
A small change may follow for the degree programmes that we provide in conjunction with Delft University of Technology. Students will be informed if this is the case.
Evaluation of study progress
Over the past few months, Leiden University has closely monitored the impact of the coronavirus situation on study programmes and study progress. This has shown that study progress is up to standard. The university therefore considers it important to maintain the BSA system.
Focus on well-being
This study has shown however, that student well-being is under a great deal of pressure. The university has therefore decided to lower the BSA norm. In addition, the university will continue to make every effort to help students with the problems they are encountering as a result of coronavirus measures. For example, next week sees the start of the Student Well-being Weeks, with more than 100 (online) activities aimed at boosting your well-being.

All fourteen universities in The Netherlands have taken the decision to lower their BSA norm within a margin of 10-15% this year. This was announced by the Association of Universities in The Netherlands (VSNU) on 14 January. The decision was made in consultation with student unions ISO and LSvB.
