Field School 2/Internship-BA3 information update

21 April 2021

Find the relevant information on Field School 2/Internship-BA3 here:

Dear students of BA2,

Hopefully, coming summer will make up for all those hours of fieldwork you had to do without last year. After completing your Field School 1 coming May/June it is highly recommended to do as many hours as you possibly can for your Field School 2 (10 ects). Some of you might already have applied for Field School 2 projects, but to those who didn’t yet we recommend to already look for Field School 2 possibilities.

We are aware that it will not be easy to find Field School 2 possibilities, as many projects still suffer from the backlash of the ongoing pandemic. As faculty we will do whatever we can to facilitate Field School 2 possibilities. Because of the current shortage of Field School 2 projects, it is by way of exception also allowed to apply for fieldwork related internships like data processing at an archaeological company or lab work. It is however still strongly recommended to look for actual fieldwork internships when you aspire a career in field archaeology.

Additionally, a network & career event will be organised in the first week of May. During this event many of the archaeological companies and municipalities with field units in the Netherlands can be asked about Field School 2 possibilities. Also, the Leiden University projects abroad that hopefully can proceed can be contacted. More information on this event will follow soon. In the meantime:

-        Carefully read the Field School 2 course description in the e-study guide

-        Make sure you are enrolled in USIS for the Field School 2, that will enrol you in the Brightspace module

-        Keep a keen eye on the Field School 2/Internship Brightspace module

-        A list of archaeological companies and municipalities with field units in the Netherlands will soon be published in Brightspace, that can be used to apply for internships

-        Actively look for Field School 2 possibilities

If you are planning on doing a Field School 2 abroad (faculty projects excluded), you need official permission from the university before you leave. Please have a look at the Leiden University policy for internships abroad, that shows how to obtain this permission: https://www.student.universiteitleiden.nl/en/announcements/2020/07/permission-for-study-related-activity-abroad?cf=archaeology&cd=archaeology-ba

Finally, as I will also be your teacher in Field School 1, we can further discuss Field School 2 possibilities during your week in Oss coming May/June.

Best of luck in finding a the right Field School 2. And please note that in case that you did not succeed in finding field projects, you can also do this in January or next Summer.

Finally, the faculty staff will give priority for internship possibilities for BA3 students who are planning on graduating next September, but still find themselves short of Field School 2/Internship-BA3 ECTS. Please send an email to the study advisor a.s.a.p. if you need such priority.

We hope this information serves you well and wish you luck in finding the right internship!
