Study delay due to corona? Read about the possibilities for starting your master’s

26 May 2021

Have you incurred a study delay during your bachelor’s programme as a result of corona? In that case, you will be informed about the possible options and the procedure to make use of the extension arrangement.

What does this mean for me?

The extension arrangement gives you some room for manoeuvre, but you should bear in mind that combining a master’s programme with several study components from the bachelor’s programme can be very tough. We, therefore, advise you, if at all possible, to complete your bachelor’s programme in good time.

Who is this extension arrangement for?

The arrangement applies for all bachelor’s students at Dutch institutions and for EEA students who want to start a master’s at the faculty of Humanities in September 2021, but who have incurred a delay as a result of corona. Pre-master’s students can also make use of this arrangement.

Which master’s programmes does this extension arrangement apply to?

The extension arrangement applies to all master’s programmes at the Faculty of Humanities, apart from the joint degree in MA European Politics and Society.

What does the extension arrangement mean?

Students can start the master’s programme in September conditionally and complete their bachelor’s programme later.

One-year extension

Students can start the following six master’s programmes under certain conditions without having fully completed their bachelor’s programme:

  • MA African Studies
  • MA Media Studies
  • MA Middle Eastern Studies
  • MA Linguistics
  • MA Russian and Eurasian Studies
  • MA Religious Studies

Conditions:

  1. 165 of the 180 credits from the bachelor’s programme have been obtained by 1 September 2021;
  2. If the bachelor’s programme has not been completed on 31 August 2022, the student’s enrolment in the master’s programme will be terminated;
  3. Once students have entered the master’s programme, they may only start to work on their master’s thesis once the BA final assignment has been completed.

The same arrangement applies for pre-master’s students who still have 15 credits from their pre-master’s programme to complete, with the exception of the BA final assignment; this assignment must be submitted by Friday 24 September 2021 at the latest.

One-month extension

For the remaining 20 master’s and research master’s programmes, students can start the programme under certain conditions without having fully completed their bachelor’s programme:

  2. If the bachelor’s programme has not been completed by 30 September 2021, the student’s enrolment in the master’s programme will be terminated.

The same applies for pre-master’s students.

What conditions do I have to meet?
