Vacancy Student mentor - BSc Security Studies

As the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, we find it important that all our students feel integrated in our student community and supported by their programme. To ensure this, for the past two years we have run a mentoring programme for first-year students at our BSc Security Studies. To be able to organise this mentoring programme for the coming academic year as well, we are looking for enthusiastic and engaged student mentors (2 to 6 hours per week) that would like to introduce our students to the world of the university, the faculty, their studies, and The Hague.

As a student mentor, you facilitate and guide two or three groups of 15-20 first-year students. You fulfil an exemplary role and are the first point of contact for your students. You will host – pre-conceived – sessions that focus on guiding students through university life, helping them to gain some study skills, and enhance their wellbeing. In addition, you give advice about studying, exams, (digital) systems, the culture and community of the program, potential choices to be made further in the programme, and student life.


  • (Upcoming) second- or higher-year students Security Studies with good study results and a strong affinity with the programme;
  • Is enthusiastic, with a positive attitude, and strong motivational skills; 
  • With good communicative skills in English; 
  • Has strong organizational skills, both online and offline; 
  • Has empathy, helping others, inclusivity, and diversity as core values 
  • Preferably has experience with guiding groups (e.g., as a substitute teacher, ‘bijlesdocent’ or exam trainer); 
  • Is available between 22 August 2022 and 1 February 2023. Since the training program will be held during the week of 29 August, it is mandatory to be in The Hague that week. 
  • Has a valid work permit in The Netherlands or the possibility to get it (if applicable).

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Organising and planning the mentor group meetings;
  • Preparing and chairing these meetings;
  • Answering practical questions from your mentees;
  • Supporting your mentor group with connecting with the programme and faculty;
  • Being the point of contact for your mentees, and being able to refer them to someone else if needed. 

We offer you:

  • An extensive training program that teaches you important skills (dealing with resistance, group dynamics, active bystanding, etc.)

  • Compensation as a student-assistant (± 14 euros per hour), according to the collective labor agreement of Leiden University, including vacation and December benefits. You will get a contract for 40 hours (if you mentor one group), 70 hours (two groups) or 100 hours (three groups) for the entire semester. This roughly amounts to 2 to 6 hours per week (on average, some weeks will be busier than others).
