Wanted: students for the 'Korean Wave' cultural festival on 24 and 25 September

23 June 2022

You may already have heard it through the grapevine, but on Saturday 24 September and Sunday 25 September there will be a big two-day event at Museum Volkenkunde: 'The Korean Wave'!  During this event there will be lectures, demos, workshops (e.g. cooking, dance, Taekwondo, Korean Beauty) and stalls with Korean products/Kop merchandise.

Of course we, as the only study of Korean Studies in the Netherlands, cannot be left out of the programme. Therefore we are looking for enthusiastic students who are willing to help out at this event to show everyone the importance of Korean Studies!  On this day there are a number of projects and activities you can contribute to:

Exhibition Things That Talk: The Korean Wave & I

You may have heard of Things That Talk before: a platform where students highlight an object and tell the story behind it. If you participate in Things That Talk, you choose how you want to tell your story, maybe you want to tell your favorite K-pop album, a concert ticket stub, or do you rather dive into the museum's collection to find a link between the past and the present? Each story starts from an image that is important or interesting to you. This can be an object (poster, merchandise, other Korea-related things), but also for example a fragment from a movie, series or music video

We are still looking for students who would like to participate! In return, we offer you:

  • A small compensation fee (€100 to €150 on completion);
  • An opportunity to work with a professional team (photographer, editor, storyteller);
  • A project that is a great addition to your CV;
  • Your story on display as a temporary exhibition in Museum Volkenkunde;
  • Additionally, students who are willing to present a short story will also get free entrance to the event (worth €15).

On the website of Things That Talk you can find examples of students who preceded you. Are you interested? Please let us know as soon as possible at e.veldkamp@hum.leidenuniv.nl.

Greetings from Korea

In the museum we also have a very large wall at our disposal on which we want to show pictures from Korea. Did you take beautiful pictures during your Korea stay or vacation? We would love to receive them, whether they are photos of your day at university or photos of the view! Send your photos to koreanwave@hum.leidenuniv.nl or tag/DM @leidenhumanities on Instagram, of course it will be mentioned who took the photo.

Wanted: volunteers

In addition to these two image projects, we will also be hosting a number of workshops/activities. Think 'Korean 101', 'Write your name in 한글' and 'Korean (drinking) games'. For this we are looking for students/alumni who want to introduce Korean language and culture to the general public. You will receive a small compensation (a VVV voucher of €25) and a free ticket if you help out at one of the activities. Please sign up as a volunteer at koreanwave@hum.leidenuniv.nl.

Hopefully you are as excited as we are and we'll see you in September!
