Going abroad for your studies - Approval and precautions

11 May 2023

Are you going abroad for an activity that is part of or related to your study programme? Remember that you may only travel to countries that are code green or yellow according to Dutch governmental travel advice. You must also always obtain advance approval from Leiden University.

Advance approval

Whether you are going for an exchange programme, internship or excursion, your trip must always be registered and approved in the Study Abroad Portal (uSis). That way the university can reach you in case of emergencies.

If you go abroad without approval or to an unsafe destination (code red or orange), you will not receive study credits, funding or transcript recognition for your activity.

Precautions

Events in Afghanistan, Ukraine and Sudan have shown the importance of taking precautions and continually monitoring the situation before and during your trip.

  • Read the information on the Study abroad - Health and safety page and make sure you are well prepared.
  • Continue checking the travel advice right up till your day of departure. If your destination changes to code orange or code red, you may not travel.
  • If your destination becomes unsafe during your stay, Leiden University will contact you to discuss your options. You can also contact your Leiden University exchange coordinator or internship coordinator directly for advice.

In case of emergencies abroad
