Social

Stay connected - also during the summer holidays

17 July 2025

The summer holidays are almost here and that means a period without teaching and for some students, a time of fewer opportunities to meet up with one another. However, it is also certainly important during this period not to stay alone, to seek each other out (online) and to stay connected.

Stay connected

What can you do?

  • Send a message: Take the time to send a friend or fellow student a message. A simple “How are you?” can mean a lot.
  • Schedule to do fun things:  If you're in the area, grab a coffee together, walk in the park, or some other shared activity.
  • Share your story: Use social media to let others know what you are doing and encourage them to do the same. A shared experience can bridge the gap between you and others.

What to do in your city?

In summer, there are often many activities to do. Curious about what's on offer in your town? Check out the best tips for in Leiden and Den Haag.

Listening ear

Do you need contact or a listening ear during this period? During the summer holidays, you can contact the Luisterlijn (Listening line)for a personal conversation. You can call this helpline anonymously, day or night, all days of the week, all year round. Because talking makes you feel better. When you are hurting or worrying about something; when you feel alone or happy. The Luisterlijn gives you that extra bit of support.

If you need a listening ear, get in touch with the Luisterlijn

  • Phone no: 0880767000
  • Available daily (24/7). Including over the holidays!
  • De Luisterlijn conducts conversations in Dutch. If a volunteer wants to and can, the conversation may be conducted in another language, but that is up to the volunteer.
  • More information about helplines abroad can be found on IFOTES.+

Urgent help

  • If you need urgent help, including psychological support, you should contact your general practitioner. Outside office hours, you can contact the GP medical centres in Leiden and The Hague
  • If you don’t have a general practitioner, you can find more information here about how to find a doctor.
  • In an emergency or a life-threatening situation, call 112.

If you have suicidal feelings, call 0800 0113, chat on 113.nl, or contact the international help center or your country's help centre.
