Cologne Summer School 2025

20 March 2025

“From Town to Metropolis: Exploring the Diversity of Urban Life in Roman Pompeii, Ostia, and Rome”

A cooperation between the Archaeological Institute (Prof. Dr. Michael Heinzelmann, Diana Wozniok M.A., Classical Archaeology) and the Historical Institute (Prof. Dr. Dorothea Rohde, Ancient History) of the University of Cologne, Germany.

Join us for our first archaeological and historical Summer School in Pompeii, Rome and Ostia in July 2025! Over the course of nine days, participants will explore Roman urban life and urban planning in these three unique cities. How did people live, work, and worship in the ancient world? An intensive three-day programme in each site covers public and private living spaces, burial practices, religion, and the economy. Combining theory and hands-on experience, the programme includes engaging lectures, guided explorations, workshops and discussions with various experts of local institutions as well as visits of the German Archaeological Institute and the German Historical Institute.
