Over €2,500 to Femicide Monitor thanks to NSE respondents
In the first quarter, thousands of Leiden University students completed the National Student Survey (NSE). In gratitude, the university donated a sum of €2,577 to the Femicide Monitor.
In eight weeks, the NSE was completed by 10,308 students at Leiden University, a response rate of over 30%. Students from the LUMC faculty provided the highest response rate at 35%.
The NSE is a large-scale national survey in which students give their opinions about their study programme, for example about the content, study guidance and the connection to the labour market.
This year, by completing the survey, students not only contributed to better education, but also to the Femicide Monitor. For every student who completed the NSE, the university donated €0.25 to the research project, resulting in a total donation of €2,577.
Femicide Monitor
Every eight days a woman is murdered in the Netherlands. In about half of these cases, the perpetrator is her (ex-)partner, usually a man. Professor Marieke Liem says that effective combating of this problem is hampered by a lack of structural data. With the launch of the database, called the Femicide Monitor, Professor Liem hopes to identify warning signs of femicide, also known as femicide, and thus contribute to policy and prevention.
On 16 June, Cathelijne van Akkooi, assessor of Faculty LUMC, handed the cheque on behalf of Leiden University to Esmee Turpijn, student assistant to Marieke Liem.
