Oat milk from the vending machine: a pilot on six locations

3 September 2025

Would you prefer to have plant-based milk in your coffee? Well, now you can, including coffee from the vending machine. From 1 September up to the end of December, the coffee vending machines on six locations will be  converted to using oat milk. These new machines will vend all drinks based on 100% plant-based ingredients and can be used by students, staff and visitors.

The UFB is using this pilot to check out the preference for plant-based hot drinks in the vending machines. The new machines can be found in the FSW building, Restaurant Schotel, Wijnhaven, the university library, the Kamerlingh Onnes Building and the Lipsius Building.

You will be able to recognise the machines vending plant-based milk from their new, colourful appearance and the Oat of this World logo.

Why plant-based?

Sustainable and environmentally friendly

By deliberately opting for plant-based milk, you are reducing the effect on the climate. Plant-based food requires less water and land, which means the ecological footprint is considerably less.  Just one choice for a plant-based alternative can save 24 kg of CO₂ emissions and 7,694 litres of water every year.

Healthy

Plant-based milk is rich in fibre and healthy fats. Fibre supports good digestion and lowers the risk of health issues such as diabetes.

Diversity

By offering plant-based milk, we are  better able to cater for different dietary preferences. This is part of our wish to create an inclusive environment where every lifestyle is respected.
