Works Thermal Energy Storage on Arsenaalstraat (20 to 22 October)
In 2026, the buildings on the Doelen complex of the Humanities Campus will be connected to the Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system. As part of the preparations, minor excavation works will take place on Arsenaalstraat from Monday 20 October to Wednesday 22 October. These works are expected to last for three days.
Pedestrian and cyclist access will remain possible throughout the works. However, some traffic disruption and noise nuisance may occur.
What is TES?
Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is a sustainable energy provision system that uses groundwater as a medium for energy storage. The system works by storing heat in the ground in summer to be used for heating in winter, and vice versa. Heat and cold are stored in underground wells. The result is significantly lower CO2 emissions and reduced energy consumption, which contributes to a sustainable campus.
The Herta Mohr building is already connected to the TES system. In phase 2, for which works will commence in 2026, the buildings on the Doelen complex will also be connected.
Planning construction TES system
The tendering process to select a contractor for this project is currently underway. A contractor is expected to be appointed in early November. The works to connect the TES system are scheduled to begin in early 2026. Further details regarding the exact timeline, potential disruption, and accessibility will be shared shortly.
