Ready for graduation? This checklist will help you prepare for the Dutch job market

13 April 2026

Note book with checklist

Are you about to graduate and would you like to start your career in the Netherlands? The Dutch job market can be quite challenging for international professionals. Fortunately, you are not alone in this situation: Career Services is here to support you. First and foremost, let’s see the positive side of this quest! Every step, however small, will bring you closer to achieving your goals in finding the perfect job match.

Start now, using this checklist:

1. Find out what suits you best

First, let’s have a closer look at you: what would you like to do? What brings you the right kind of energy? Which strengths and skills do you have to offer? These tools will help you determine your personal insights and profile. Our Career Planning module will help you throughout this process, whenever you’re struggling to start or stuck in the process.

2. Time to update your cv and LinkedIn profile

Make sure to invest some time in building your curriculum vitae (cv) and a cover letter that will be noticed. Don’t forget to include your LinkedIn profile, as an online presentation of yourself and your professional ambitions. Should you find this challenging, please contact your study advisor. We’re happy to assist you with your cv as well as your professional profile check.

3. Exploring job vacancies

Next, let’s find out which vacancies suit you. Which job functions appeal to you and what are the requirements? You can find plenty of inspiration browsing the Leiden University Jobs & Events portal as well as tips for finding a job.

The job vacancy that appeals to you the most may not be a 100% match with your skills and expertise. In that instance, we would still advise you to apply. Try anyway! The worst thing that can happen is that you will not get the job. But you just might!

4. Start networking

You’ll be surprised to find out how many job opportunities present themselves through within your own network. Have a chat with alumni, teachers or any professionals you happen to meet. Alternatively, visit a career event or make use of your LinkedIn network to make new contacts. Even a single conversation can sometimes provide you with new insights. Visit the Leiden University Career Zone in order to find more networking tips.

5. Prepare for your job interview

Congratulations! You’ve been invited to a job interview. Just remember: job interviews work both ways. Sure, the employer gets to determine whether you may be suitable. However, it is just as important an opportunity for you to find out whether the workplace will suit you. These tips will help you prepare.
