Construction on the streets around Arsenaal and Huizinga

20 April 2026

The work on the installation of the TES system is progressing and is on schedule. In the coming period, the piping that will connect the underground sources at the Huizinga and the Arsenaal is planned, among other things. The contractor is doing their best to minimize disruption, but some inconvenience is unavoidable. For example, the main entrance of the Huizinga will be inaccessible for several days between May 12 and June 5. A temporary entrance will be used instead.

Planning

The first well is already drilled near Huizinga. The construction of the second well will take place next week in the Arsenaalstraat. The twee wells will then be connected by underground pipelines. There will be periods of noise and traffic disruption around the Huizinga, Arsenaal and Reuvens buildings.

The work, carried out by De Ruiter Boringen, will take place in phases:

  • Until April 28: start of the installation of the piping. Initially, Paterstraatje will be closed.
  • April 14–17: finishing work on the source at the Arsenaal. Once completed, Arsenaalstraat will reopen to traffic.
  • April 28 – May 11: installation of the piping from Paterstraatje towards the entrance of Huizinga and Lipsius.
  • May 12 – June 5: installation of the piping around the intersection near the entrance of Huizinga and Lipsius. During this period, the main entrance of the Huizinga will be closed for several days. A temporary entrance will be used, and signs will indicate the correct route.
  • June: completion of the piping and other works.

Exterior painting works at the Arsenaal

In addition to the TES activities, painting work is currently taking place at the Arsenaal. Only the exterior of the building is being painted.

Making buildings more sustainable

Leiden University is making its buildings more sustainable. A TES system reduces CO₂ emissions and energy consumption. The Herta Mohr Building has already been connected to the system. The buildings on the Doelenzijde are next.

Do you have any questions or comments about the works?

Twice a week, there is a walk-in consultation hour at the Huizinga for staff, students, and local residents who have questions about the works. On Tuesday mornings between 9:00 and 12:00, and Thursday afternoons between 13:00 and 15:00, Wendy Tebbertman from De Ruiter Boringen will be present in room 0.15.
