Temporary power interruptions – Gorlaeus Building (B and C wings)

6 July 2026

From mid-July, the Real Estate Department will carry out a mandatory inspection of the electrical installations in the B and C wings of the Gorlaeus Building. This inspection is required to ensure the safety of the fixed electrical installations and to help prevent incidents.

What will happen?

During the inspection, the power supply in parts of the building will be switched off and back on several times via the local distribution boards. These planned interruptions will take place between 07:00 and 09:00. After 09:00, the power supply will be fully restored and all facilities will operate as normal.

What should you expect?

Between 07:00 and 09:00, there may be temporary power interruptions in the B and C wings of the Gorlaeus Building. We recommend that you do not work in the affected wing or on the affected floor during these hours.

Please note the following:

  • Electronic access doors and access control systems may be temporarily unavailable.
  • Wi-Fi, lighting and coffee machines may be unavailable.
  • If possible, work from home until 09:00 or use an alternative workspace elsewhere in the building.

The following facilities will remain operational: lifts, fume cupboards and the central extraction system.

If you work in a laboratory:

Please also take the following into account:

  • Laboratory equipment may temporarily lose power.
  • Some equipment may be sensitive to repeated short power interruptions.
  • Check in advance whether experiments or processes can continue safely during this period.
  • Equipment such as laminar flow cabinets may be temporarily unavailable.

The central air handling system will remain operational throughout the inspection. As a result, fume cupboards and extraction systems will continue to function, and no additional safety risks are expected.

How to prepare

  • Check the schedule to see which date(s) apply to your wing and floor, and add them to your calendar.
  • Do not work in the affected wing or on the affected floor between 07:00 and 09:00 hrs. Where possible, work from home until 09:00 hr or use an alternative workspace elsewhere in the building.
  • If you use laboratory equipment, experiments or processes that are sensitive to repeated short power interruptions, assess in advance whether they can continue safely during this period or reschedule them. If you are unsure how the work will affect your laboratory or equipment, please contact the Service Desk. They have access to a detailed schedule and can advise when the work will take place in your laboratory.
  • Save your work before 07:00 and shut down sensitive equipment where necessary.
  • If you are unsure about the impact on specific equipment, such as laminar flow cabinets or freezers, please contact the Service Desk in advance.
  • Avoid scheduling important meetings between 07:00 and 09:00 on the day(s) that apply to your building section.
