Public transport strike on Wednesday 14 October: teaching will go ahead

12 October 2026

A public transport strike has been announced for Wednesday 14 October by the FNV and CNV trade unions. Employees working in regional and urban public transport – excluding Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague – will go on strike on Wednesday. In particular, bus services will be unavailable throughout the day. For more information about the reasons for the strike, visit the FNV and CNV trade union websites, among other sources.

Teaching will go ahead

Teaching at Leiden University continues as normal during public transport strikes. This also applies to Wednesday 14 October: teaching and assessments will go ahead as scheduled and will not be rescheduled.

Important information for students

If you have compulsory classes that day, attendance will still be expected. If the strike means that you are unable to attend or will be late for a class with a compulsory attendance requirement, please inform your lecturer ahead of time. In this situation, you may cite the strike as a case of force majeure. Your lecturer will take this into account, and will respond appropriately and leniently.

This does not apply to examinations or other forms of assessment. A public transport strike is not a valid reason for missing an assessment and does not entitle you to a resit.

Important: Check Brightspace regularly for any additional information about your examinations or classes.

Information for staff

On Wednesday 14 October, staff may work from home in consultation with their line manager, provided their duties allow it. If you are a lecturer and this affects your teaching, please inform your students in good time via Brightspace.
