Creative writing: Science Fiction (Dutch and English spoken)

For whom
For anyone who has had enough of family stories and wants to write about jetpacks. This course is specifically for ambitious beginners, but is also suitable for people who are simply curious about the genre, or people who have had a cool idea for an alien planet for a while and finally want to do something with it. Knowledge about the genre is not necessary. This course is for Dutch and English speaking participants.

Content
You will write a science-fiction story in six lessons and ten weeks. For many participants, this is their first time doing this. In this course you will learn how to write a story set in a whole new world, with a strong core idea and unique characters. You will be helped in the first three lessons. Writing exercises and some theory about the genre will stimulate your creativity. In addition, you will read and discuss a number of modern science-fiction stories that give you an idea of ​​the current state of the genre.

The lessons after that are there to discuss your progress. The teacher will give you extensive individual feedback on your first draft, so that you can start rewriting right away. In order to also learn from your fellow students, passages from each text are discussed in the lessons.

Teacher

Max Urai (www.maxurai.nl) is a writer and editor. His stories, essays and reviews have appeared in Vooys, Nooit Meer Slapen, Mr. Motley and The Reactor. In 2018, his essay “Stickin' it to the man – lessons from activist Netherlands” was nominated for the Joost Zwagerman Essay Prize. He was an editor at Perdu in Amsterdam and at Tijdschrift Ei.
