African Arts and Literatures Today
Although political, sociological, ethnographical or anthropological perspectives from, on and about Africa are frequently examined and discussed, African artistic domains remain relatively underexposed. This is remarkable, especially when taking into account that African artistic practices are booming – both at home and around the world. So now, more than ever, is the time to explore these artistic perspectives of Africa.
This series aims to address this situation by providing lectures, readings and discussions by academics and artists active in the field of African culture and literature. Topics that will be discussed include literature, translation, theatre, new media, art history, performance art, popular culture, the archive and curation. In this way, “African Arts and Literatures Today” seeks to provide a contemporary, lively and interdisciplinary perspective on African cultural production.
This series is a result of a collaboration between Studium Generale, Leiden University, the Research Center for Material Culture - the research institute of the Tropenmuseum, Afrika Museum and Museum Volkenkunde -, the African Studies Centre and the University of Amsterdam.
