The upcoming elections for the European Parliament will have a crucial impact on the future of the entire European continent.

On April 29th we will live stream the debate from the Theatre on the Vrijthof in Maastricht between the candidates designated by their European political party for the post of European Commission president. The leader of the political party who wins the European Parliament election on May 23rd is likely to be appointed as the President of the European Commission. This person will play a pivotal role in dealing with a number of crises the European Union is confronted with. External and internal economic instability and the inherent imbalance between the economies of the member states have destabilized the euro, the common currency shared by nineteen of the twenty eight member states, and has put in several member states the question of an ‘Exit’ on the table. Next to a financial and economic crisis, a geopolitical crisis is unfolding at the borders of the EU, with rising tensions between Europe, the United States and Russia, and the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. In short, the EU is facing several crises to which it can either respond or slide into disintegration and economic stagnation. The European Parliament election debate between the leaders of the political parties will shed light on which responses are considered politically feasible and, when implemented, affect every single citizen of the Union.

After the debate there will be drinks and a discussion.
