About the lecture

Since 2001, 26 September has been known as the “European Day of Languages”. This year’s event coincides with the BA programme English Language and Culture having become fully English-speaking, leading to a first-year international community of students from as many as 17 different countries, 12 of which are European.

In addition, this summer saw the publication of my book Languages of The Hague (also in Dutch: Haagse Talen), which contains linguistic portraits of over thirty speakers from The Hague – 17 of which represent European languages. European languages can be studied in the Humanities Faculty here in Leiden, as well as learnt at the ATC, the Academic Language Centre. Moreover, The Hague now has a route of proverbs in 33 different languages (many of which of course European) leading from Hollands Spoor Station to China Town, and back.

This presentation aims to celebrate the European Day of Languages by taking you on a virtual route along these proverbs (focusing on the European ones only) as well as by highlighting some of the main (European) linguistic tales told in Languages of The Hague.
