As part of this Culture and Politics specialisation event, Leiden staff member Dr. Karen Smith will speak about her previous role as Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Responsibility to Protect. She will reflect on how culture influences and is used in the work of the UN Office of Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect (OSAPG), as well as in the work of other actors engaged in genocide and atrocity prevention, both state and non-state. In particular, she will focus on the role of religious leaders, the significance of cultural heritage, and the power of art in processing the past, in public engagement and in awareness raising. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session, so students are encouraged to come with thematic questions as well as questions related to career prospects and preparation.
