Presidential Elections France

Geopolitical significance

The first round of the next French presidential election will take place on April 10th. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, these elections have gained a new geopolitical significance. Emmanuel Macron has sought to embody the Western liberal order resisting the authoritarian values represented by Vladimir Putin, while his most likely candidate in the runoff, radical-right candidate Marine Le Pen, has maintained both ideological and even economic links with the Russian president over the years. Meanwhile, the fragmented party landscape that has allowed for new actors to emerge (such as far-right Eric Zemmour) and the shifting international context still allow for a great deal of uncertainty in the outcome

This roundtable will gather experts to discuss the many stakes at play in the first major European election since the beginning of the war: the strengths of the candidates, the likely impact of the war and the geopolitical implications of the election amidst the reconfiguration of the global order.
