Classroom Diplomacy: Speaking Up and Facing Difficult Conversations at University
Do you ever feel reluctant about contributing to class discussions for fear of saying the ‘wrong thing’ or being ‘shut down’? Are you apprehensive talking about topics where differences in opinion are bound to arise? Or, perhaps, are you keen to learn more about how to approach these conversations in a way that is respectful to all involved? If so, attend the classroom diplomacy discussion and Q&A, hosted by COOP!
At a time where stories about self-censorship at university are on the rise, students are feeling increasingly insecure about facing tricky conversations in an environment where they are assessed and must converse with others. Dr. Thakur will therefore share his experience in research and teaching to guide students on tackling difficult discussions respectfully and diplomatically. Expect to hear about navigating ‘defensive’ or ‘offensive’ discussion tactics, and how to better cooperate and negotiate with those who disagree with you to reach agreement!
About the speaker
Dr. Vineet Thakur is a Lecturer in International Relations at the Institute for History, Leiden University.
