On June 20, the Meeting Point and the D&I Expertise Office of Leiden University will organize a round table discussion to markup World Refugee Day. Students at Leiden University are affected by wars around the world, both directly and indirectly. As an educational institution, we are committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for all. Awareness and support are important ways to facilitate students with a refugee background and ensure they feel welcome. But how do wars impact the Leiden University community? How does the university accommodates students and staff members affected by war? And why does this matter to us? What are their needs and what does the university need to offer?

World Refugee Day on June 20

World Refugee Day was coined by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. This year, the focus will be on the right to seek safety, because everyone has the right to seek safety. The round table discussion will partially follow this theme, touching upon several topics that are highlighted in by the UN Refugee Agency for World Refugee Day 2022 as well.

You can find more information on World Refugee Day in general here.

The event will include an introduction by Diversity Officer Aya Ezawa and Lesage Munyemana of the Meeting Point for refugee students, and roundtable discussions where participants engage with panelists on the question above.

We hope to help create a space to connect, engage and provide information about existing groups and initiatives within Leiden University that are committed to supporting (future) students with a refugee background.

The main language of this event is English. Do you have questions about the event? Please contact the D&I Expertise Office via diversiteit@leidenuniv.nl.

You can register for the event here by June 20 at 12:00 hrs. You can also walk in without registration, but we would like to advice you to register beforehand.
