Overview
Queer and trans migrants are targeted by illegalization, detention, and deportation, and are at the forefront of efforts to resist such practices in the United States. In this talk, professor Eithne Luibhéid introduces the edited volume Queer and Trans migrations: dynamics of illegalization, detention and deportation (with Karma R. Chávez, 2020) to discuss the ways in which these interlocking systems impact the lives of queer and trans migrants, as well as the alternatives that different queer and trans migrants envision and for which they fight.
Bio Eithne Luibhéid
Eithne Luibhéid is Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies from Berkeley, and her research focuses on the connections among queer lives, racialization processes, state immigration controls, and citizenship. She served as the Director of the Institute for LGBT Studies at UA from 2007-2011. She has been an invited speaker at universities including Harvard, Oxford, the Open University, the University of Amsterdam, and the National University of Singapore.
