As a first-generation student, being the first in your family to attend university, you may find it harder to get a job in the environment you want to work in. You may not know where to start looking and may not have any contacts in the industry or organisation that you want to work for who could offer advice. On the other hand you also have a lot to offer by your different perspective and experience.
Getting into contact with graduated first-generation students
Leiden alumna and former first-generation student Maud Alberts is working as a communications officer at Leiden University. In this meeting she will show us how to use the Leiden University Mentor Network to get into contact with former first-generation students from Leiden University and to learn how your perspective is an asset.
Meeting Point
Furthermore, students from Meeting Point will tell about their own experience in finding a job and building a network, followed by further exchange of experiences and thoughts in small groups.
Topics that will be addressed are:
- What does it mean to build a network?
- Prejudices around networking
- How to broaden your network
- Getting insight in your own network
Also, Integrand, a non-profit organisation run by students, will be present to tell you about the options they offer to mediate in getting an internship, traineeship or starter’s job, or checking your CV and/or LinkedIn profile.

Are you interested in these stories and tips, and would you like to meet other first-generation students to share experiences? Then you should definitely join this event.

Are you the first in your family attending university? Would you like to meet people from all over the university who are, or have been, in the same situation and understand the challenges you face? About the Leiden Empowerment Fund
With the Leiden Empowerment Fund (LEF) we aim to share knowledge, strengths and skills and are establishing a university-wide network of first generation students and academics, connecting what is already there. We would love to welcome you at our meetings in which we will have informative sessions and the opportunity to meet up with each other to share experiences and needs!
The LEF is made possible by the donors of the Leiden University Fund (LUF) and was a farewell gift to our former Rector Magnificus Carel Stolker. It is supported and carried out by the Diversity and Inclusion Expertise Office.
