Smart bacteria versus new antibiotics
- Friday 18 November 2022
- To be determined
Antibiotics changed the world into how we know it today. You can see antibiotics as miracle drugs. Modern medical practices like hip replacements, chemotherapy and dialysis, are not possible without the use of antibiotics. Yet, there is a problem: bacteria are very smart. Over the years, bacteria learned techniques which leave them unaffected by antibiotics. The more antibiotics we use, the faster bacteria learn. If we want to avoid antibiotics becoming ineffective, we have to be careful about how we use them.
On this day, the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) will organize a workshop addressing this issue. You will learn how antibiotics work, how they should be used, and how bacteria can become resistant in a fun and simple way.
