As a young academic, you are trying to make sense of the world through your education. Even in the early days of your academic trajectory you most likely have encountered some bumps in the road. Do you find yourself struggling when pursuing certain research topics during your studies? Are you missing sources of inspiration for themes of your interest in courses you take? Would you like to open your classroom to discuss subjects that you feel are unconventional or uncomfortable, and you do not really know how to go about this? These questions can very well be symptoms of a larger issue. In this panel discussion we will approach these questions from a decolonising perspective. Nowadays, we hear the term decolonisation/to decolonise everywhere. But what does it actually mean? And how does this impact your research and academic development?

The panel addresses questions which arise when analysing colonial structures in research and education:

  • How do underlying hierarchies and biases within academic discourse enable and limit student research?
  • What is the impact of these on students’ research?
  • Which research tools and materials are available to enable students to research perspectives which are not yet part of the curriculum and broader research agenda?

These issues are not only limited to the act of researching, but they are also part of power structures and the dynamics of the classroom.

This phenomenon may be more widely discussed amongst Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines, but it is actually relevant across all disciplines.

In examining these questions and sharing existing approaches in the area of decolonisation, this panel aims to stimulate and motivate students, and student research, which goes beyond a Eurocentric lens on past and present.

This panel is part of the European Week Against Racism 2023 activities.
