Leiden University is holding a debate for its students and staff on its ties with the fossil fuel industry in relation to the topic of sustainability. We are hoping for an open discussion and welcome different views and opinions. The language spoken will be English.

Why this debate?

In recent months, there have been protests and demonstrations at Dutch universities about their links to the fossil industry. Students interrupted our Dies Natalis celebration on 8 February here in Leiden, for instance, and in May our staff wrote an open letter with a petition calling on the university to become more sustainable. The university is listening to these calls and wants to engage with its students and staff on this issue. This will enable us to determine our course for the future.

Join in

We would like to invite all members of our community (staff and  students) to join this debate. You will need to register in advance to participate and you must be able to show your proof of ID or your LU-card at the entrance upon request.

Leiden University is committed to sustainability. It is our mission to gain more insight into the global climate challenge in our research and to develop knowledge for a sustainable future. See the dossier The sustainable university.
