  • Josh Prada, A Socio-Emotional Account of Heritage Speaker Bilingualism: From Early Childhood to Young Adulthood
  • with impulse questions and moderation by M. Carmen Parafita Couto

Abstract
Becoming and being a (so-called) heritage speaker differs greatly from other types of bilingual profile. Factors such as power differentials between language communities, political hierarchies, access to support in education, and racialisation, among others, all shape the processes driving the heritage bilingual experience. In this talk, I explore the particularities of heritage speaker bilingualism with a focus on the interplay between identity and emotions throughout the first 21 years of life. Specifically, I report on findings from two large projects (one conducted in the United States, and one in the Netherlands), zooming into similarities and differences characterising both contexts, and charting ways to become sociolinguistically-responsive(-ble) educators, policy makers, and community members.
