About the Roundtable
In recent years, an emerging body of scholarship has sought to shed greater light on European involvement in slavery both in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean Worlds. This growing literature has contributed to the expansion of our scholarly understanding of the dynamics and consequences of European participation in slavery. Importantly, it has also contributed to public discourses that reckon with the legacy and impact of enslavement, colonialism, and imperialism more broadly.
And yet, the form that this public engagement has taken is often either in commemorating the abolition of slavery, or apologies at both the national and local levels. Is this enough?
Histories Connected brings together leading experts of slavery in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and also the Mediterranean Worlds to discuss the challenges we face in transcending and communicating scholarship on slavery. The question then arises as to what comes after recognition, and what is the role of historians in the scholarly and public reckoning of this past?
