Friday evening 26 September is all about languages!
Languages open worlds. They connect people, cultures and ideas. During the European Day of Languages, we will be holding an Evening of Languages festival to give a platform to the diversity of languages and language expertise present in Leiden.
Workshops, language puzzles and an escape room
The Faculty of Humanities will offer a varied programme of lectures and workshops and a Language Market, giving a diverse audience the opportunity to learn about the fascinating world of languages.

Nederlands, Duits en Engels vormen de “Germaanse sandwich”. In een korte appetizer-lezing serveren we de sandwich met een knipoog, van verbazende overeenkomsten tot bedriegelijke verschillen. Daarna mag je zelf de handen uit de mouwen steken in een taal-spel – uiteraard met Duits als hoofdgerecht. Guten Appetit!

J. R. R. Tolkien is known as a fantasy author of books like The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but in his daily life he was a professor of Old English. In this lecture, we will explore how Tolkien's interest in the English language of the early Middle Ages inspired his epic fantasy stories.

Na eeuwenlang onleesbaar te zijn geweest, konden Egyptische hiërogliefen vanaf de vroege negentiende eeuw weer worden ontcijferde en bestudeerd. Sindsdien begrijpen Egyptologen steeds meer van Oudegyptische teksten en hun grammatica. We volgen de beslissende stappen van de ontcijferaars, en proberen zelf stukjes hiërogliefentekst te lezen.

Docenten en studenten van de opleiding Franse Taal en Cultuur brengen een selectie van literaire hoogtepunten uit de Franstalige wereld ten gehore. Klassieke en moderne teksten uit Frankrijk en andere Franstalige landen komen aan bod. De Franse taal is namelijk niet alleen prachtig om naar te luisteren, maar bevat ook krachtige voorbeelden van geëngageerde, ontroerende, en inspirerende literatuur.

Je hebt iets gezegd wat verkeerd valt. Iemand voelt zich door jou beledigd of bedreigd. Een woord dat je al jaren gebruikt, blijkt ineens racistisch. Een seksistische grap 'kan tegenwoordig echt niet meer'. Als je zoiets niet zelf hebt ondervonden, zie je het wel op tv of sociale media: bijna elke dag wordt er een publieke figuur ter verantwoording geroepen voor een controversiële uitspraak.
Maar wat zeg je terug? Hoe verdedigen mensen zich tegen de beschuldiging dat hun woorden 'fout' waren? En hoe redelijk is dat? In deze lezing laat ik met actuele voorbeelden uit media en politiek zien hoe inzichten uit de klassieke retorica kunnen helpen om deze vragen te beantwoorden.

We'll explore how jokes, humour, laughter and comedy work in Jane Austen's novels - and also in everyday life (especially British life). And we'll touch on some theories of comedy and hear some very bad jokes too along the way.

This playful, beginner-friendly workshop is a gentle introduction to the Korean alphabet, Hangul. We'll use engaging, timed reading games to help you start decoding simple, everyday Korean words. Expect a low-pressure look at the language, with a brief talk about what these words reveal about daily Korean culture.

Exploring Nuances of Spoken Language with Word-Stories is a multilingual workshop conducted by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), using words in translation.
Unpacking spoken words through layers of translation and meaning-making is a form of immersion that offers insights into the way language is used in society. Word-stories make the communicative practices of everyday speech interactions both visible and audible inviting us to view spoken words as windows into diverse cultural and knowledge imaginaries.
In this workshop, facilitators will guide participants in developing and sharing their own word-stories using a variety of hands-on exercises. Join us if you are interested in exploring word-stories as a method of critical reflection and research, and more broadly, as a tool for intercultural understanding.

In this interactive workshop, participants will step into the shoes of patients and doctors, testing AI tools such as Google Translate and ChatGPT in real-life health communication scenarios. Together we will explore both the possibilities and pitfalls of machine translation in multilingual healthcare.

In deze lezing vertel ik het verhaal van het onverwacht grote aantal taalfamilies in Zuid Amerika. Hoe kan het dat Zuid Amerika, het laatste continent dat mensen bevolkt hebben, één van de meest diverse is als het gaat om taalfamilies? Hoe heeft deze diversiteit zich zo snel kunnen ontwikkelen? Via een reis langs de geologie, archaeologie, genetica en taalkunde zal ik deze paradox bespreken en komen tot het meest waarschijnlijke antwoord op die vragen.

In dit spel krijg je in groepjes (vertaalde) citaten van Machiavelli’s Principe toebedeeld. Elk groepje kan deze inzetten bij verschillende politieke scenario’s die in de zaal gepresenteerd worden. De groepjes beoordelen elkaars reacties op (1) politieke doeltreffendheid, (2) moraliteit en (3) uitspraak en gesticulatie van het zestiende-eeuwse Florentijns.

By harnessing the evocative power of ideophones, Japanese advertisers craft compelling narratives, inviting consumers to experience the sensory journey of their products. This interactive workshop will 1) introduce the participants to the topic, 2) explain the most recent developments in Japan, and 3) will offer a hands-on experience through interacting with real food items using Japanese language.

In honour of World Deaf Day, this workshop a team of deaf academics from the HANDS!Lab at Leiden University Center for Linguistics will dive into the world of sign languages, the first languages of Deaf communities worldwide. In this workshop, you will learn a handful of signs, together with tips and tricks for basic communication in deaf contexts. You can put your newly learned signs into practice in a fun sign game.
