How can civil wars be ended in a sustainable manner?

Since the end of the Cold War, violent conflicts have often been terminated through peace agreements that generally include power-sharing measures: institutional guarantees that groups previously in conflict will have decision-making power and access to public resources. Some of these agreements have succeeded in keeping the peace, in other countries they have been undermined. Even when violence remains absent, profound questions have been raised on the democratic and developmental consequences of power-sharing. Building on decades of research, Prof. Dr. Matthijs Bogaards will reflect on the failures and successes of power-sharing and how to move research and policy forward.
