This Symposium aims to raise awareness among students about the Uyghur genocide currently happening in the Xinjiang region, perpetuated by the Chinese government. We will discuss what are the events that lead to these mass atrocities, what are the mechanisms implemented by the Chinese government in the Xinjiang region and abroad to oppress Uyghurs (diaspora), where we will tackle the issues of extermination and detention camps, mass sterilisation, mass surveillance and forced labour.

We will have a special focus on the role of NGOs in advocating for Uyghurs’ rights, for attending to the Uyghur’s diaspora needs, and for empowering Uyghurs to participate in decision-making processes.

We will also talk about how students can take actions at their scale, and how they can support the Uyghurs’ cause individually or through their engagement with NGOs.

Speakers

  • Rushan Abbas, founder and executive director of Campaign for Uyghurs
  • Ahmedjan Kasim, executive director of Dutch Uyghur Human Rights Foundation
  • Qalbinur Sidiq, Uyghur activist and refugee
