lease note: this Current Affairs Lecture in The Hague is entirely Dutch-spoken.

The radical conflict in the Sahel, a region in West and Central Africa, is fought not only on the ground but also online. In many West African countries, the presence of both jihadist and criminal groups is increasing, and the struggle is increasingly taking place on digital platforms.

In this currents affairs lecture, prof. Mirjam de Bruijn examines how social media is used as a political weapon. Images, messages, and narratives create a parallel, almost dystopian world in which propaganda and polarisation shape perceptions of the region and the wider world. It shows how information has become a powerful tool in modern conflicts, both offline and online. After a brief introduction, an in-depth discussion with the audience will follow, focused on knowledge exchange and questions, under moderation of Michel Don Michaloliakos.
