This international, bi-continental seminar brings together scholars from Latin America and Europe to revisit dependency theory in light of current global transformations, including geopolitical tensions, financialisation, ecological crisis, and widening inequalities.

The programme is organised around three main strands:

  1. The historical development and contemporary relevance of dependency theory.
  2. (Neo-)imperialisms, geopolitical tensions, and international economic relations.
  3. New theoretical and methodological horizons, including debates on extractivism, global value chains, the ecological crisis, and transformations of work.

Confirmed speakers include Adrián Sotelo, Ana Esther Ceceña, Ana Grondona, Claudio Katz, Diego Giller, Emir Sader, José G. Gandarilla, Marcelo Dias Carcanholo, Mariano Treacy, Mónica Bruckmann, Nildo Ouriques, Raúl Delgado Wise, René Ramírez, Sebastián Sztulwark, Andrew Fischer, Angus McNelly, Carla Coburger, Devika Dutt, Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven, Jonas Van Vossole, Luis Mah, Natália Bracarense, Patrick Mockre, Rogelio Madrueño, and María Gabriela Palacio, among others.

The seminar also includes a discussion of Decolonizing Economics: An Introduction (Dutt, Alves, Kesar, and Kvangraven), in dialogue with dependency theory perspectives.

The event is coorganised by UNAM, the University of Buenos Aires, the University of Coimbra, CLACSO, EADI, Leiden University, and partner institutions.
