Abstract

Full societal integration of people with severe physical disabilities: that was the premise of the accessible neighborhood that arose in Arnhem in the late 1960s. In many aspects, Het Dorp was a pioneering initiative with far-reaching impact that attracted criticism alike. In my PhD research, I focus on the perspectives and experiences of (former) residents to better understand Het Dorp in terms of emancipation, identity and belonging. I concentrate on relationships and sexuality in particular as a deeply personal yet also very public phenomenon in the context of physical disability. During the seminar, I will share several preliminary findings and welcome critical insights into the historiographical embedment of my research and how to productively combine my archival materials and oral history interviews.
